The 2002 Iowa Youth Survey is the 10th in a series of youth surveys that have been completed every three years since 1975. Participation was sought from all public and non-public schools in the state. Students in the 6th, 8th, and 11th grades answered questions about their attitudes and experiences regarding substance abuse and violence, and their perceptions of their peers, family, school and neighborhood/community environments. A total of 96,971 questionnaires were received representing 94.1% of the public school districts and 27.5% of the non-public schools in the state.

The 2002 youth survey utilized all questions and responses used in the 1999 survey, and added several new questions regarding certain prohibited activities on school property, the student's perceived career path upon finishing high school, and job and job seeking skills developed in school. Survey reports list responses to every question on the survey, providing total percentages and breakdowns by grade and gender.

Reports are available in the following categories: State of Iowa, Counties, Judicial Districts, DECAT Regions, Department of Human Services Service Areas and the Department of Public Health's Substance Abuse Treatment Managed Care Plan Regions and Substance Abuse Prevention Service Areas. Also available is the Iowa Youth Survey Trend Report 1999 and 2002, which contains comparisons between the 2002 and 1999 surveys using a youth development results framework.
