The 2008 Iowa Youth Survey is the 12th in a series of youth surveys that have been completed every three years since 1975. Participation was sought from all public and non-public schools in the state. Students in the 6th, 8th, and 11th grades answered questions about their attitudes and experiences regarding substance abuse and violence, and their perceptions of their peers, family, school and neighborhood/community environments. A total of 97,741 validated questionnaires were received representing 95% of the public school districts and 23% of the non-public schools in the state.
The 2008 youth survey utilized most of the questions and responses used in the 2005 survey, and added several new questions related to gambling, special accommodations and military status of parents. Survey reports list responses to every question on the survey, providing total percentages and breakdowns by grade and gender.
The 2008 reports contain a section with data combined for selected questions and presented in easy-to-read charts. Thirty-four constructs within nine framework domains are included with breakdowns by grade and gender.
Reports are available in the following categories: State of Iowa, Counties, Judicial Districts, and the Department of Public Health's Substance Abuse Prevention Service Areas. A Trend Report comparing 2005 data with the 2002 and 1999 youth survey data is also available. Decat Clusters, Substance Abuse Treatment Managed Care Plans and DHS Region Reports were not compiled for 2008 due to budget constraints.
*The constructs for Parental/Guardian Boundaries and Gambling were revised by the Consortium in June 2009.
