The 2010 Iowa Youth Survey is the 13th in a series of youth surveys that have been completed every three years between 1975 and 2008. In 2008, the Legislative Code changed the administration of the survey to a two year cycle.  Participation was sought from all public and non-public schools in the state. Students in the 6th, 8th, and 11th grades answered questions about their attitudes and experiences regarding substance abuse and violence, and their perceptions of their peers, family, school and neighborhood/community environments. A total of 78,382 validated records were received representing 86% of the public school districts and 17% of the non-public schools in the state.

The 2010 youth survey utilized most of the questions and responses used in the 2008 survey, and added several new questions.  Youth suicide questions were updated and the survey was designed to administer the age-appropriate questions to specific grades only.  Survey reports list responses to every question on the survey, providing total percentages and breakdowns by grade and gender.

The 2010 reports contain a section with data combined for selected questions and presented in easy-to-read charts. Twenty-six constructs within eight framework domains are included with breakdowns by grade and gender.

Reports are available in the following categories: State of Iowa, Counties, Judicial Districts, and the Department of Public Health's Substance Abuse Prevention Service Areas.  A Trend Report comparing 2010 data with the 2008, 2005, and 2002 youth survey data is also available. Decat Clusters, Substance Abuse Treatment Managed Care Plans and DHS Region Reports were not compiled for 2008 or 2010 due to budget constraints.
